Tales from the Gas Station Poster

A narrative-driven pixel art poster capturing the surreal, dark humor of the series Tales from the Gas Station through dense environmental storytelling.

‍

Final poster illustrating the main character in a quiet moment of exhaustion, surrounded by subtle narrative references and hidden details.

‍

This piece reimagines Tales from the Gas Station as a pixel-art poster, translating its surreal, darkly comedic tone into a dense, atmospheric scene inspired by retro horror games.

The goal was to capture a story defined by absurdity, dread, and humor within a single frame. The design needed to balance tone carefully, feeling unsettling without losing the dry, almost mundane nature of the setting.

At the same time, the poster had to support layered storytelling. The world of the series is filled with strange rules, unexplained events, and recurring details, all of which needed to be present without overwhelming the composition.

‍

Progression from early pixel block-in to refined composition with added environmental detail and lighting.

‍

The piece was built entirely within a pixel grid, starting with large block shapes to establish composition and readability. From there, detail was gradually layered in through multiple refinement passes.

Lighting and color were adjusted iteratively to create a late-night atmosphere, while preserving enough contrast for the character and key elements to remain readable.

‍

‍

The central figure is shown slumped behind the counter, a direct nod to Clerks, reinforcing the monotony and exhaustion of the job. This grounded pose contrasts with the strange, often supernatural world hinted at around him.

Background elements and objects reference events and characters from the series, creating a scene that rewards closer inspection. These details are intentionally subtle, allowing the image to function both as a cohesive whole and as a collection of smaller discoveries.

‍

Pixel typography and embedded “rules” list reinforcing tone and narrative.

‍

The title treatment was designed to feel slightly unstable and horror-leaning, contrasting with the otherwise structured pixel grid.

Beneath the scene, a dense list of “rules” references the series’ recurring motif of strange guidelines for surviving the gas station. Handwritten edits and crossed-out notes introduce another implied voice, adding a layer of narrative tension and personality.

The final poster balances atmosphere, humor, and narrative density within a constrained pixel format. It communicates tone immediately from a distance, while offering depth and discovery up close.

As a personal project, it also demonstrates the ability to translate a written story into a visual system, using composition, detail, and style to carry both mood and meaning.
